Satarō was the illustrator for a number of woodblock-printed picture books published in the late 1800s. Flowers and birds were the subject of one of these books which was entitled Kachō Sōmoku Saishiki Gafu (i.e., Dainty Picture Album of Flowers, Birds and Plants) and published in 1891. The twenty-two pictures included in the book are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Perhaps the most notable characteristic of these pictures is the intensity of the red colors which was achieved using aniline dyes imported from Europe.
